Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana, or KVPY Scholarship, is an annual national fellowship programme in basic sciences. It is organized by the Department of Science and Technology, under the Government of India, to highlight the importance of inculcating scientific temperament as a fundamental duty and boost India’s preparedness for the future of science and technology.
The 2025 exam of the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY Scholarship exam) is one of the most awaited opportunities for students interested in pursuing their careers in the field of science. Let’s find out more about the KVPY Scholarship Examination 2025.
Objectives
Every year, the Department of Science and Technology conducts this nationwide exam through the administering body, the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, to test the scientific aptitude of interested students.
The primary objectives of the examination are:
1. To identify young students from classes 11th, 12th, and from the 1st year of undergraduation, with talent & aptitude for scientific research.
2. To help the students recognize and realise their academic potential.
3. To encourage students across India to take up careers in advanced sciences and research.
4. To ensure the growth and development of the best scientific minds for research and development.
Eligibility
The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana eligibility criteria is divided into three categories:
1. SA Stream, for students currently studying in 11th standard/class
2. SX Stream, for students studying in 12th standard/class
3. SB Stream, for students in their first year of UG degree in basic sciences
Candidates from the SA Stream need to score at least 75% aggregate marks (65% For SC/ST/PWD) in Maths and Science in their final examinations. The eligibility criteria for SX Stream candidates is that they must expect at least 60% aggregate marks (50% for SC/ST/PWD) in their Class XII boards examination. The candidates who belong to the SB stream must have scored a minimum of 60% (50% SC/ST/PWD) marks in their 1st year exams of B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S.

Benefits
Under the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana, the fellowship(scholarship) benefits set as per the level of the student’s academics are as below:
1. For students belonging to SA/SX/SB, during their degree period of B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math. / Integrated M.Sc. /M.S., they shall be awarded a sum of Rs. 5000 as a monthly fellowship and a sum of Rs. 20000 as an annual contingency grant.
2. For students belonging to SA/SX/SB, during M. Sc. / 4th to 5th years of Integrated M.Sc. /M.S./M.Math./M.Stat., they shall be awarded a sum of Rs. 7000 as a monthly fellowship and Rs. 28000 as an annual contingency grant.

Exam Pattern & Application Process
The annual KVPY (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana) Scholarship Exam takes place in two stages, aptitude test and interview round. The aptitude test is a computer-based 3 hr long MCQ-based test, to be completed in one sitting. While the exam has no set syllabus, the candidates are required to prepare topics from Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics from their respective syllabus of their class/university, which will be divided into two sections with varying numbers of questions in each.
For SA stream candidates, the exam consists of 80 questions (for 100 maximum marks), while for SB and SX Streams, it consists of 120 questions (for 120 maximum marks). The students can choose to take the exam in either English or Hindi.
(Note: The exam does have a negative marking system. The students will get 1 mark for each correct answer in section 1 of the paper, and 2 marks for each correct answer in section 2 of the paper (for SA/SX/SB). While a ¼ mark will be deducted for every wrong answer in section 1 and a ½ mark will be deducted for every wrong answer in section 2.

How to apply for the KVPY Exam?
Students can find the online application forms at the official website of KVPY Scholarship, separately for each category, i.e., SA Stream, SX Stream, and SB Stream.
Step 1: First, the first-time appearing students must visit the official KVPY Scholarship website and then log in using a valid user ID and password.
Step 2: The next step is to go to the application form page and fill in the required details including personal and academic. Students also need to upload their signatures (Image size - less than 150 kb) and passport-size photographs (Image size - less than 80 kb).
Step 3: Finally, pay application fees online via net banking, credit or /debit card payments.
Also, the students should keep a scanned copy of their caste certificate and/or a PDF copy of the medical certificate in case they are applying in the SC/ST/PWD category.
