Exam Pattern & Selection Process In UPPCS Exam

Similar to the UPSC Civil Services Exam, the UPPCS exam is held in three stages, i.e., Prelims, Mains and Interview stage, and if the candidate fails to clear any of the stages, they have to reappear in the stage 1 the subsequent year. Thereby, making this exam significantly difficult to clear.

Let’s understand the pattern of each stage:

UPPCS Prelims - This stage is a one day exam. But it consists of two papers, i.e., General Studies and CSAT. Both the papers are objective type with the general studies one consisting of questions related to specific topics such as current affairs, history, geography and many more, while the CSAT is only to test the candidate’s aptitude skills. Both the papers being MCQ type require the candidate to fill OMR sheets with the correct answer and have the provision of 1/3rd negative marks for every wrong answer.

The GS paper of UPPCS prelims consists of 150 questions for a total of 200 marks, while the CSAT holds 100 questions for 200 marks. Candidates must keep in mind that the score of the prelims stage is only for qualifying to the next stage, i.e., the mains, as per the cut-off, and its marks do not get added to the candidate’s final marks tally.

UPPCS Mains - Unlike the UPPCS prelims, the Mains stage of the exam is conducted in more than one day. The mains exam is divided into 8 sections, i.e., General Hindi, Essay, GS 1, GS 2, GS 3, GS 4, GS 5 and GS 6. The whole mains stage is subjective type, which means, it requires the candidate to write descriptive answers to the questions asked in the paper within the given word limit. The GS 1, 2, 3 and 4 are subject-focused papers, while the GS 5 and 6 are based on specific knowledge of the Uttar Pradesh state. Candidates must note, GS 5 and GS 6 are newly added to the syllabus, replacing the earlier optional subject choices. The main stage is conducted for a total of 1500 marks.

UPPCS Interviews - Once the candidates have cleared stage 1 and stage 2 of the exam, they have to appear in front of the UPPSC panel for a one-on-one interview or personality test, which consists of oral questions for a total of 100 marks.

Once the interviews of all the candidates are completed, the final list of selected candidates is released in the order of merit, and specific job positions are assigned to them.

To sum it up, if you are someone who is a domicile of Uttar Pradesh and enthusiastic about serving the country while securing a good government job, UPPCS exam is one such opportunity that can fulfil your dreams.
